The chaos is real. A truck drove through pedestrians while Bastille Day celebrations were taking place in Nice, France on Thursday night. What seemed to only happen in a few minutes definitely affected the lives of many. People from all over the world mourn with France for their loss and this crime that took place during what was supposed to be a day of celebration.

Bastille Day (July 14th) signifies the start of the French Revolution. Even if the storming of the Bastille prison in 1789 was a violent action, it is considered a day of peace by many today. If you need help understanding the concept of Bastille Day, think of it as an annual celebration similar to that of America's Independence Day.

Wait, an attack happened on Bastille Day in Nice, France? But isn't everything in Nice, France supposed to be . . . nice? STOP. It's time to raise some awareness not only for the tragedy that had recently happened, but also for this particular tradition and the French culture in general. In order to fully empathize with France, people like us Americans need to fully (or at least attempt to) understand where the people of France are coming from.

Sounds awesome to me. It's no surprise that people continue to be excited about Bastille Day and its annual celebration. Now did everyone benefit from that particular day in 1789? No. The monarchy obviously got a critical hit from the public since this was the main purpose of the French Revolution. What, you don't know much about what happened back then? Alright, let's gain some understanding about that matter too.

As you can tell, this day was really developmental to France and its citizens. It allowed them to grow and prosper as a new nation after going against the monarchy . . . not so soon though. Since there was no rule, there was a period of instability that follow shortly after. What matters though, is that most things turned out a lot better in the end (today).

This sudden truck thing just had to ruin a sweet celebration. People suspect that it was a terrorist attack. Others disagree and think that some crazy person did it after drinking. For those of you who believe the latter, you are . . . neither right nor wrong as of now. I believe that the main takeaways from this event are cultural understanding, awareness of people's surroundings, and the need for more protection.

France is one of America's oldest allies. Let's participate in service events, or at least help with spreading awareness about this situation. Let's do it on behalf of being a good friend and shoulder to cry on.
