Civic Engagement

The Civic Engagement project at OCAPICA focuses on the importance of the community being involved with current events and educated on policies that affect their community. We want to see more Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders in Orange County more civically engaged and voting.  OCAPICA has a nonpartisan voter engagement program as well as policy programs support a pathway to citizenship.  Orange County has the third largest Asian American and Pacific Islander community in the nation and it is vital that the community has a voice and can gain a stronger voice by becoming more civically engaged.  This November will be the presidential elections and we plan to implement a large nonpartisan, civic engagement program with the goal of reaching more than 50,000 voters.  Issues of concern from the community includes, housing, economy, education, and health care.   Being part of the Civic Engagement project will entail working in an environment that shifts based upon the focus of the task. Tasks involve working with ethnic communitites, high school students, university students, and reaching out to policy makers.

Community Organizer

Hello, my name is Joyce Kim and I'm a second generation Korean American. I'm currently a third year student at California State University Northridge, double majoring in Political Science and Asian American Studies and aspiring to becoming a lawyer. I one day hope to use my education acquired from my academic degrees to fight for social justice and help create a change for underrepresented ethnic communities through the legal system. I'm the community organizer at OCAPICA's Policy Program. My job focuses on civic engagement and working with the community to bring attention to policy issues. On my spare time, I enjoy playing video games and making people feel slightly uncomfortable by talking extensively about my love for Finding Dory.
